When you think of Rio de Janeiro, what comes to mind? Probably Cristo Redentor, Pão de Açúcar, or the Copacabana boardwalk. But I want to invite you to cross the "beach line" and discover Imperial Rio. Having been the capital of Brazil and the seat of the Portuguese Royal Family, the city center holds architectural gems that make you feel like you're in another era. Shall we take a stroll through this other side?

National Library

Our first stop is the National Library, the largest in Latin America. Its collection began when Dom João VI brought thousands of books from Portugal in 1808. The building is imposing, and walking through its rooms is like traveling back in time. It's the perfect place for those who love literature and want to understand how Brazil became the cultural center of the Portuguese empire — yes, Rio was the capital of Brazil for many years! There you'll find a huge collection of books, manuscripts, and documents that showcase the richness of Brazilian and Portuguese history. Furthermore, the building itself is beautiful, with details reminiscent of the neoclassical style.
Royal Portuguese Reading Room

Get your phone ready, because this place is considered one of the most beautiful libraries in the world! The Royal Portuguese Reading Room is a cultural space, founded in 1837 by the Portuguese community in Rio. The building has an impressive Neo-Manueline style facade, but the interior is breathtaking: carved wooden bookshelves that reach the ceiling and a marvelous stained-glass window. The space is a symbol of the strong connection between Brazil and Portugal that still lives in the heart of Rio, making it a perfect environment for those who love literature and architecture.
Historic Center and Porto Maravilha

Walking through the city center is like witnessing the meeting of the past and the future. After a major revitalization, the port area has transformed into Porto Maravilha. There, you can visit the Museu do Amanhã, a masterpiece of modern architecture designed by Santiago Calatrava. The museum discusses science, sustainability, and the future of the planet, making the visit a wonderful blend of past and future — it's like a bridge between what we were and what we can be. Furthermore, the contrast between the colonial churches, the old townhouses, and the museum's futuristic design shows how Rio is a city of many layers.
It's worth exploring!

Following this itinerary is an incredible way to practice your Portuguese while observing the details of the facades, reading the information plaques, and talking to the locals. These tours offer a glimpse into a side of Rio that many people don't know, but which is fundamental to understanding how the city has grown and changed over the centuries.
