The Portuguese spoken in Brazil is rich in expressions that often don't make sense when translated literally. To sound more natural, it's essential to know our informal expressions!
"Conhecer de outros carnavais"

"Conhecer de outros carnavais (Knowing about other carnivals)." What does this mean?
Meaning: Although there is no single, definitive record, the expression alludes to Carnival, a celebration traditionally marked by encounters, reunions, and, sometimes, excesses and games that create stories. Saying that you "conhece alguém de outros carnavais" (know someone from other Carnivals) means that you've known this person for a long time, from past situations or periods, and have a previous acquaintance or knowledge, often with a connotation of intimacy or having shared notable moments.
How to Use: Use it to refer to someone who is not new to your life or social circle.
Example: "- Aquele novo diretor parece ser muito exigente."
"- Ah, o Dr. Carlos? Eu o conheço de outros carnavais, ele só parece sério, mas é gente boa."
"Torta de climão"

"Torta de limão or torta de climão?" Understand!
Meaning: This is a more recent expression, a play on the dessert "torta de limão" (lemon pie). The term "climão" (climate) refers to a tense, uncomfortable situation, one of embarrassment or shame that hangs over the environment. The expression "torta de climão" is used to intensify this feeling, indicating that the atmosphere has become extremely tense or awkward.
How to Use: Use it to playfully describe a moment of great tension or social discomfort.
Example: "Durante o jantar, a Maria cumprimentou a Ana dando os parabéns pela gravidez, mas ela não estava grávida! Foi uma torta de climão gigantesca!"
Mastering expressions like these goes far beyond knowing the grammar; it's immersing yourself in the culture!
