The letter X is full of surprises in our language! With varied sounds ranging from soft to more pronounced, it appears in so many different words that it makes our speech even more interesting. Exploring the ways the letter X can sound is a fun journey through the universe of the Portuguese language, where each sound tells a different story.
Shall we discover these little sound secrets together?

The letter X can represent the following sounds:
The /CH/ sound: This is the most common and intuitive sound. It appears in words like "Xícara" (cup), "Peixe" (fish), and "Enxame" (swarm). It generally occurs after diphthongs or after the initial syllable "en-".
Sound of /S/ or /SS/: Here, the X disguises itself as a sibilant. We can find it with an "S" sound at the end of syllables, as in Texto (Text) and Explicar (Explain), or with an "SS" sound in the middle of words like Próximo (Next) and Auxílio (Help).
The /Z/ sound: When the X appears between vowels, especially after the initial letter "E", it takes on a vibrant sound. Classic examples are Exame (Exam), Exemplo (Example), and Exercício (Exercise).
The /KS/ sound (Fricative): Known as the "táxi" sound, it is common in words of foreign or scientific origin. Besides the word "táxi" itself, we have "fixo" (fixed), "tóxico" (toxic), and "anexo" (attached).
The pronunciation challenge

Knowing when to use each sound doesn't always follow a clear rule, which makes auditory practice essential. Often, visual memory and active listening are the best tools to avoid confusing an "exame" with a "enxame."
